Animal Collective in Big Sur.

Last night I got the highly-anticipated assignment (and a hard one to get a press pass for) when I shot Animal Collective at Henry Miller Library in Big Sur.

Tickets for the experimental group's set sold out in minutes a few months back. I'm illustrating a story on the concert promoter, Britt Govia of Folk Yeah, who is touted as a "Bill Graham" type.

The Library always has cool shows and the fog made for a cool atmosphere. As I've been shooting concerts, I've found many cool shots come not only from the performers, but also from the crowd as there can be some cool passion.

I enjoy the challenge of making photos with stuff like this, because I want to always just shoot the band, but there are many great photos elsewhere if you know how to look for them.

The story I wrote for the Weekly is here.

Here is my work:

Sunshine Freestyle Surfabout.

On Saturday afternoon, I wandered down to Carmel Beach at 10th street for the 29th annual Sunshine Freestyle Surfabout.

Before last Wednesday, I had never shot surfing before. I had borrowed a 600 f/4 (see me below shooting with it) for the week from Nikon Professional Services, who are super great people to work with and snapped about. I even threw a teleconverter on for an effective 850mm f/5.6). I was able to capture some nice action.

Car Racing.

On Saturday morning, I got up early and hit the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for car racing.

It's a small race so I was able to have my run of the shooting positions, which was very nice. I shot most of the track stuff with a 70-200 f/2.8 or a 600 f/4, which I rented from NPS.

I also brought out my D2H, which I still argue is a fantastic sports camera if you're shooting at ISO 500 or below and are controlling your exposures. The LCD screen is useless to tell how good the files really are, even at only 4mp.

Monster Trucks.

For my final assignment of the weekend, I wandered over to Salinas on Sunday afternoon for the Monster Jam. As a kid I could see it being cool, but not so much as an adult.

I made a few nice shots and got out of there.

Surfing, pt. 2

I wandered down to the beach again for the third afternoon in a row and produced some of my best shots yet.

I was lucky enough to catch a nice sequence of two surfers crashing
into each other after catching the same wave too close to each other.

The clouds were out and made for nice, soft light, which made
my exposures very nice.

The shot below I like, because you can just see the surfer's
board after he took a drive, but his board is still afloat.

Surfing.

I shot surfing for my first time yesterday in preparation for this weekend's annual Carmel Surfabout.

I borrowed a 600 f/4 from Nikon and threw a 1.4 tele-converter on it making the lens effectively an 850 f/5.6, which still required a lit cropping, but I made some images.

More to come soon.

Interesting Portrait.

I shot this photo tonight of Shorinji Kempo Monterey Branch Master Kazuki Arita at the Seaside Buddhist Temple for an upcoming story.

This was really the only shot I was stoked with as I saw the light pocket and him teaching in it, so I stopped down my camera a bit to get the shadows and made him "pop" in the light as I captured his training emotion.

Surf Kayaking

I shot kayak surfing for a story yesterday. It's pretty cool, though I had to crop a bunch to get some tight shots. The 600mm I rented from NPS showed up while I was shooting. Oh well.
