Family Photos 2012

The Courys and Changs. Christmas 2012.

So my Christmas holiday was this past week since my sister, brother-in-law and nephew came up and won't be here for the actual holiday.

Once again, I shot the family pictures.

Photos of the Year 2012

Fire dancer Rosalia Webster of BiG SuRCuS.

This past year offered me up a lot of opportunities to make cool photos, so I took advantage of it.

I did a lot of commercial work, including large jobs with Specialized Bicycles and a few wineries and restaurants around Monterey County.

On the editorial side,  I shot a few assignments for Cycle World magazine and the Stockton Record newspaper.

I shot a lot of portraits for clients, including a lot of friends who do some really neat stuff.

In October, I fulfilled a professional goal by getting my first photo published on the Associated Press photo wire.

Working with the Associated Press

Fans cheers as San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum drives past.
It was wild walking down Market street in San Francisco on Wednesday during the Giants World Series parade. Confetti was everywhere and so were screaming fans in orange and black.

I got asked by my friend Marcio J. Sanchez who is a staff photographer at Associated Press to help out, which was dream call for me. The above photo got put on the wire and was distributed all over the world with the rest of the photos they published.

A few weeks before, I got asked to help shoot the post-season in Oakland as the A's took on the Detroit Tigers in the American League Division Series.

They forced a game 5, but lost. The Tigers got swept by the Giants in the World Series and lost in Detroit.

Both events were crazy. We worked really long hours, but it was really exciting being on the field level when the home team won in the post-season.

I might start following baseball again.

Portrait of Avant-Garde Composer Philip Glass

I had a very cool and very exclusive photo session yesterday at Brazil Ranch in Big Sur where I got the opportunity to photograph avant-garde composer Philip Glass.

After I mentioned enjoying his interview on National Public Radio's This American Life (hosted by his cousin Ira Glass), Philip told me how Ira (younger in age) would ask about extended members of the Glass family. Philip talked (and laughed) when mentioning family that no one much liked, but Philip thought were good people nonetheless.
"Every family has them," he says.
Later, we discussed Paul Simon's Graceland record and discussed the upcoming Monterey Jazz Festival and Glass' performance at the Sunset Center with Foday Musa Suso.
Before leaving, we walked down a trail that overlooks the famous Bixby Bridge with the ocean in the background.

To Indianapolis and Back.

This past week, I took a work holiday and traveled once again to Indianapolis to cover my second Red Bull Indy Moto Grand Prix.

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa ran a near-perfect race and it was a bad weekend for American riders with Nicky Hayden not starting after a crash on Saturday and Ben Spies' engine blowing up while he was in the lead on Sunday.

It was fun and I made some images, my favorites which are below.

In a funny and awesome moment, I found a b-roll shot of me shooting a press conference on the website. I had seen the camera guy shooting and I thought I walked in front of his shot, but turns out he wanted me in it...

I also got a chance to meet Jorge Lorenzo and I showed him my photo of his crash at Laguna Seca in 2011 (which he had already seen many times I imagine). He told me it was good, smiled and patted me on the shoulder. He's a nice guy and should regain the world title this season.

Welcome to Indianapolis.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

I'm on a work holiday this week shooting the Indianapolis Moto Grand Prix. It is the only other United States MotoGP race after the last round at Laguna Seca.

This is my second year after shooting the Indianapolis MotoGP in 2011.

I'm here with my very good friend Andrew Wheeler of AutoMotoPhoto and he is cooking for us all weekend. It's been fun and currently is storming over Indy.

More photos to come this weekend.

Published Work From The 2012 US Moto Grand Prix

Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo during Saturday's qualifying practice where he smashed the circuit record twice in the last 5 minutes of the session.

I had some photos from the 2012 Red Bull U.S. Moto Grand Prix at Laguna Seca published around.

Firstly, Cycle World magazine used a few of my AMA photos of Josh Hayes on their website.

Secondly, Specialized Bicycles ran a few photos of Yamaha's Ben Spies for their sponsoring website.

Finally, I wrote a review on a new Nikon doubler lens teleconverter for The Photo Brigade website, which will bring a lot of people to my website.

I'm off to Indianapolis next week for the next round of the MotoGP World Championship...
